FAQ’s

How much does it cost to charge an electric car?

As with traditional fuel engine vehicles, the cost of charging an electric car will depend on the model, make and specs of the vehicle. The cost can also vary between home, work and public charging stations.

The average domestic electricity rate is 14p per kWh. A full charge for a typical electric car (60kWh battery) will cost approximately £8.40 and give you around 200 miles of range. You can view our Home Charging options here.

Many public charging points offer free charging to their customers or visitors. Other locations may offer a pay per session to on-street chargers or free use if you have access to a network subscription. Cost will also vary depending on power rating and the charging speed available.

Workplace charging varies across organisations, with some companies offering free employee charging while others set a paid tariff. Find out more about Workplace Charging.

How long does it take to charge an electric car?

Like cost, the time it takes to charge an electric vehicle is dependent on the model, make and specs of your car. A typical electric car (60kWh battery) will take 6 hours on average for a full charge at a 7kW charging point. The larger your vehicle’s battery and slower the charging point, the longer it can take to charge.

What is the OLEV grant, am I eligible and how do I apply?

Officially titled the Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS), the grant refers to government funding for electric car home chargers. It is available for most electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid cars. A list of all eligible vehicles are available on the government website.

For home charging, you can save up to £350 on installation costs with the OLEV grant. You may claim one chargepoint per eligible vehicle and up to two per household. Scottish residents may benefit from further funding via the Energy Savings Trust Scotland (EST), for a grant of up to £300.

OLEV also offer a Workplace Charging Scheme grant for businesses, charities and public authorities. This funding provides up to £350 off the cost of purchasing and installing workplace charging stations for up to 40 sockets.

ELIGIBILITY

To be eligible for an OLEV grant, you need to have leased an electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle for at least six months, purchased or ordered the vehicle after 1st October 2016. This includes company cars.

You must also have:

  • Off-street parking, such as a garage or driveway
  • An installation date which is no more than 4 months ahead of the date of delivery or when you become the registered user of the vehicle
  • An OLEV-approved chargepoint and chargepoint installer

HOW TO CLAIM THE GRANT

All you need to do is answer a few simple questions and share some documents with us – we will complete the required paperwork on your behalf for both OLEV and EST funding.

How long does installation take and who will be fitting my new charging station?

Each installation is unique. The standard installation takes between three and four hours.

Our local and trusted engineers have been trained to the latest standards within the EV industry and will carry out the installation. In the event of any minor issues following the installation, we offer free over-the-phone customer support.
